Constrained-Space Visual Inspection

Amentum developed a first physical prototype of an articulated camera system designed to pass through access ports as small as 19 mm and capture hundreds of ultra-high-resolution low field-of-view images that are stitched into a hemispherical projection, in real time. The concept originated from a Sellafield Game Changers challenge, but was later self-funded by Amentum to produce a demonstratable inspection tool that can support wider remote inspection services.

Challenges

The concept pushed the limits of miniature mechanical design. The team had to develop and work closely with suppliers to manufacture strong reliable bespoke parts, integrating an actuated joint system at tiny scale, managing lead times for specialist parts in an unstable supply-chain, and rapidly making design alterations after the discovery that M20 access ports do not have consistent thread heights and many have less than a 19 mm clear diameter.

Solutions and Outcome

The project delivered a detailed design and an Mk1 physical prototype, improved image stitching software, manual subsystem testing for the hinge and actuation, proven custom low FOV high resolution miniature camera design, and a documented set of changes for Mk2. It also identified suitable suppliers for bespoke parts, generated real prototype imagery for client engagement, and built a route to future enhancements such as increased joint manoeuvrability and radiation tolerance.

The concept is designed to reduce intrusive access requirements and improve inspection context by stitching high-resolution images into a fuller hemispherical view. That creates the potential for faster, safer outage support and more repeatable results able to better show changes over time. The concept enables visual inspection through very small access points without sending people into hazardous or inaccessible spaces, supporting safer inspection of ducts, tanks and plant rooms.
