Re-Vector® ZH Robotic Arms

Ross Innovation Ltd

Re-Vector is highly versatile and robust robotic arm - designed for operation in difficult-to-access environments.

Robotic arm technology is mature – who needs another arm?

The conventional view is that robotic arm technology is mature and that no radical improvements in performance are likely to occur. Most new robotic arms are refinements of long-established principles. Materials improve, increasing power-to-weight performance. Actuators become more efficient, gears more precise and control systems more sophisticated. These developments deliver steady incremental gains.

However, robotic manipulation in real industrial environments remains far from a solved problem.

Conventional robotic arms still struggle when tasks move beyond highly structured production environments into geometrically complex, cluttered or high-variability workspaces. This is particularly true in high-mix, low-volume operations where robots must repeatedly adapt to changing positions, orientations and access constraints.

Conventional robot arms exhibit several fundamental shortcomings:

  • Significant regions of the reachable workspace are difficult or impractical to use effectively
  • The robot can obstruct its own movement, limiting feasible trajectories
  • Dexterity and manipulability often degrade sharply in difficult poses
  • Performance becomes increasingly brittle in confined or geometrically complex environments
  • Accessing constrained internal structures typically requires highly specialised solutions with limited payload capability

Snake-arm and continuum robots were developed to address some of these issues. However, these systems generally rely on flexible body deformation using tendons, pneumatics or cable-driven structures. While capable of navigating constrained spaces, they typically sacrifice stiffness, payload capacity, positional accuracy and robustness. This limits their usefulness in demanding industrial applications.

What does the solution look like?

How do you design a robotic arm that can:

  1. Maintain high freedom of movement throughout complex workspaces
  2. Reduce geometric self-obstruction
  3. Operate reliably in confined and internally accessed environments
  4. Retain industrial levels of stiffness, payload capability and precision
  5. Adapt to variable, high-mix industrial tasks rather than only repetitive fixed automation

Re-Vector – distributed spherical steering

Re-Vector is a new robotic arm architecture based on alternating axial and transversal joints arranged to create distributed spherical steering throughout the arm.

Rather than relying on conventional orthogonal joint arrangements, Re-Vector uses composite spherical functionality distributed across successive modules. This enables very large directional changes at each triad while maintaining a compact cylindrical form factor.

The result is a robotic arm with exceptional freedom of movement, capable of navigating complex geometries while retaining industrial robustness and payload capability.

Unlike continuum or tendon-driven snake arms, Re-Vector is engineered as a high-performance industrial manipulator platform. The system combines advanced kinematics with high-torque actuation, harmonic reduction gearing, force-torque sensing and precision electromechanical control.

The architecture is particularly suited to:

  • Confined and internally accessed environments
  • Complex geometric structures
  • High-mix, low-volume manufacturing
  • Inspection, manipulation and maintenance tasks requiring continuous tool reorientation
  • Operations where conventional robotic arms become geometrically constrained or operationally brittle

Proven industrial platform

Re-Vector is not a laboratory concept. The robotic arms are regularly transported, deployed and demonstrated at universities, research organisations and industrial facilities throughout the UK. The platform has proven robust, repeatable and tolerant of repeated transport and setup cycles. The system is engineered to a high industrial standard, combining:

  • Exceptional power-to-weight performance
  • High structural stiffness
  • Precision positioning and repeatability
  • Modular scalability
  • ROS2-based control and integration
  • Rapid deployment and usability

Positional precision is typically ±15 arc seconds, with integrated support for advanced sensors, tooling and autonomous path-planning workflows.

Re-Vector ZH product range

The current Re-Vector ZH range includes:

Re-Vector® ZH1700: large-format robotic arm with 1.7 m reach

Re-Vector® ZH1300: intermediate-scale platform

Re-Vector® ZH800: compact high-dexterity platform for constrained environments

All systems are supplied with a ZH Node base station, providing integrated control electronics, power distribution, safety systems and rapid deployment capability.

The robotic arms operate within ROS2-based Digital Twin environments supporting path-planning, simulation and integration of third-party sensors and tools. The architecture supports both electromechanical and hydraulic actuation depending on application requirements.

Re-Vector has applications across advanced manufacturing, aerospace, nuclear decommissioning, inspection, maintenance and other sectors where conventional robotic manipulation struggles with geometric complexity.
